Arcturis received an IES Illumination Section Award for the lighting design of the St. Louis Science Center’s GROW Exhibit. The 5,000 square foot pavilion features a flexible, open floor plan to house ever-changing exhibits and events. It is an integral part of an overall project which encompasses a full acre of indoor and outdoor learning space, interactive activities and exhibits. With a focus on agriculture, the design concept of the pavilion was to create one simple formal gesture that is reflective of the agricultural history of the region interpreted in a modern way. Connecting to the outdoor learning spaces was important and achieved through large glass openings at the north and south ends. Along with the benefit of views to the surrounding plant life, controlled daylight floods the space. Special glazing designed to minimize heat gain and glare combined with a minimal overhang was selected on the south face. The overhang is designed to minimize direct views to the sun at high angles. GROW elegantly highlights the journey of food from farm to fork though it’s detailed level of high architectural design. The continuity of open space and natural light from exterior to interior creates a seamlessly memorable experience for visitors with a big impact on the city.
